'Round 2 of Florida': Student charged after apparent threat against high school

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (WLOS) — A student has been charged after authorities say he sent a Snapchat photo with an apparent threat against a high school in South Carolina.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office says they first started investigating the threat against Broome High School after another student told her parents about the photo.

According to the sheriff's office, the photo showed a white male juvenile wearing a partial mask and holding an apparent assault rifle. The photo was captioned with the words "round 2 of Florida tomorrow," according to authorities.

When deputies responded to the suspects home, the suspect told officers the Snapchat post was intended as a joke and didn't have any serious intentions.

Authorities say the suspect's parents consented to a search and recovered a mask and an "authentic-looking" assault weapon, which turned out to be an airsoft rifle.

The freshman student was charged with disturbing schools, detained, and taken to a Department of Juvenile Justice facility in Greenville, S.C.

The sheriff's office said the name of the suspect and the photo will not be released since he is a juvenile.

In a statement, Superintendent Kenny Blackwood commended the student who reported the photo.

“The District would like to commend the student who came forward with information," Blackwood said. "It is this kind of courage to speak out that can and will prevent tragedies.”
