Gunman went to Walmart and McDonald's after school shooting: Sheriff

PARKLAND, Fla. (CBS12) — The teen accused of killing more than a dozen people at a high school in Parkland opened fire inside the building for about seven minutes before running out with fleeing students, then stopped at a Walmart and McDonald's.

Forty minutes later, a police officer from Coconut Creek Police arrested 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz without any problems.

Cruz is facing 17 counts of premeditated murder for Wednesday's shooting on Valentine's Day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel released a timeline in the shooting.

Israel said Cruz got picked up by Uber at 2:06 p.m. He arrived at the school at 2:19 p.m. Investigators said the suspect entered the east stairwell of Building 12 with a rifle hidden in a soft black case. At 2:21 p.m., Israel said the attacker began shooting into classrooms, returning to several rooms in the process. Investigators said the gunman then took the west stairwell to the second floor where he shot one person in a classroom. He then went to the third floor, dropped his rifle and backpack and ran down the stairs. At 2:28 p.m., deputies said the suspect ran out of the school toward the tennis courts. He ran across the fields in a westerly direction, along with fleeing students, Israel said.

The sheriff's office said Cruz ran to a Walmart at 2:50 p.m. where he bought a drink at Subway. He then walked to McDonald's and sat down briefly at 3:01 p.m. He walked out and ultimately Coconut Creek police had him in handcuffs in Coral Springs at 3:41 p.m.
