WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--Police in North Carolina have arrested a 27-year-old man who crashed into an ambulance transporting a 3-year-old boy who later died from his injuries.
According to Circa affiliate FOX 17 News sister-station WCYB, Jose Romero has been charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to reduce speed, and driving without a license.
The crash took place early Sunday morning when Romero struck a Virginia ambulance transporting the boy to a Winston-Salem hospital along with his mother. Police found the ambulance on it's side following the crash.
According to Winston-Salem Police Lt. Rick Newnum, investigators believe the child was in stable condition before the crash early Sunday. Newnum said it appears that the crash further injured the child and left him with critical injuries.
The toddler died from his injuries on Monday. WCYB reports three adults on the ambulance had minor injuries.
According to court documents, Romero had a BAC of .19, slurred speech, and glassy eyes.
