Woman found guilty of attempted murder after newborn baby left in dumpster

Conway, S.C. (WPDE) — Shelby Taylor has been found guilty of the attempted murder of her baby daughter.

Police said the baby girl, named Trinity Grace, was left for dead in a dumpster with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck back in 2015.

The trial for Taylor began on Monday and went to the jury on Thursday.

According to our media partner, The Sun News, the defense argued that Taylor suffered from a psychological condition called “transient perinatal psychosis,” a severe form of postpartum depression.

Psychologist Robert McCarthy, an expert witness for the defendant, said there are about 100 diagnosed cases of transient perinatal psychosis a year. The condition is “very rare,” he said, and it’s commonly associated with what he called “baby dumping.”

Defense attorneys asked the judge to delay sentencing. It has been scheduled for next Thursday at 2 p.m.

Her bond has been revoked and she will remain in custody until she is sentenced, according to the solicitor's office.

Trinity Grace, 2, is being raised by her biological grandparents.
