Woman killed, suspect shot by deputies on I-95 in Lantana, Fla. (WPEC)

Murder, deputy-involved shooting shuts down South Florida highway

LANTANA, Fla. (WPEC) - Multiple people are dead after a multi-car crash on I-95 at Lantana Road, following a police chase and a deadly shooting. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office says the suspected gunman was shot and killed by deputies.

As of 11 a.m., deputies advised that I-95 northbound would be closed from Lantana Road to Sixth Avenue for the rest of the day while they investigated.

According to PBSO, it started when a man shot a woman in the head in Lake Worth, then took her in a car and fled the scene.

PBSO says the man fled the scene, driving the wrong way along I-95 before causing multiple crashes involving 6 vehicles. He came to a stop at Hypoluxo Road near Lantana. That's where deputies shot the man when he got out of the vehicle.

Addressing the media around 12:45 p.m., Sheriff Bradshaw said the deputy fired on the man because he feared for his life.

At 9:50 a.m., Palm Beach County Fire crews say first arriving firefighters reported a crash involving multiple vehicles with one on fire.

Palm Beach County Fire reports two people were killed in the crash.

Another patient was taken to a trauma hospital, while a fourth patient was taken to a local non-trauma hospital.

While addressing members of the media, Sheriff Bradshaw also said that the suspect was involved in a separate shooting on South Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach Tuesday afternoon.

PBSO says the woman who was shot today is dead.

This is the second shooting on I-95 Wednesday.
