WASHINGTON (ABC7) — The Washington Redskins may not be ready for Kirk Cousins to hit free agency after all.

According to a report from ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Redskins could look to franchise tag their 29-year-old quarterback in hopes of trading him to replenish some of the assets they used up to acquire veteran signal caller Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs.

The feeling of many was that Cousins would hit the open market after reports surfaced Tuesday that the Redskins will send a 2018 third round pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller to the Chiefs for Smith.

Tagging Cousins for a third straight season would cost the team $34.5 million against the salary cap. February 20 is the earliest that teams can start using the franchise tag.
