WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) -- The late Fidel Castro's 68-year-old son has been found dead after reportedly committing suicide.
Official website Cubadebate says Fidel Castro Diaz-Balart took his life Thursday after months of treatment for a "deeply depressed state."
"Diaz-Balart, who had been attended by a group of doctors for several months due to a state of profound depression, committed suicide this morning," a Cuban state run website said according to The Daily Mail.
The eldest son of Cuba's former leader was known for his distinctive beard and resemblance to his father. His nickname was Castro Jr. because of the resemblance.
A brief note read on state television said that his treatment had "required a hospitalization regime then outpatient follow-up."
Castro Diaz-Balart's mother was Mirta Diaz-Balart, a woman from Cuba's aristocracy who Castro married in his youth before beginning the revolutionary struggle that later brought him and his brother Raul to power.
Fidel Castro ruled over Cuba through 10 U.S. presidents. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 90.
