Reports: Michigan State University president to resign over Larry Nassar case

A person familiar with situation tells The Associated Press that Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon will resign Thursday amid outcry over Larry Nassar.

The student newspaper, the State News, also is reporting that she will announce her resignation.

Nassar, a former university and USA Gymnastics team doctor, was sentenced Wednesday to up to 175 years in prison following more than a week of televised testimony from victims in the sexual abuse case. More than 100 women testified about abuse from Nassar, including two women from Southwest Michigan.

Soon after the sentence was issued, the Michigan House passed a resolution calling for Simon's resignation because of the scandal that has erupted around the case, and questions about whether years of complaints from young athletes were ignored.
