A judge in Texas says God told him to sway jurors during human trafficking trial

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - According to the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, judge Jack Robison of the 207th Judicial District expressed his opinion regarding a trial to a jury before the verdict.

The trial gained media attention throughout the past few months. It involved 32-year-old Gloria Elizabeth Romero Perez, and her alleged role in continuously trafficking her teen niece.

Reports indicate that Judge Robison attempted to sway the jury towards a not guilty verdict. The judge allegedly later apologized to the jury for his actions, saying God told him to intervene.

Ultimately, the jury went against the Judge’s advice, and determined the woman to be guilty of continuous traffic of a person.

As the Herald-Zeitung reports, Robison’s faith led to his actions inside the courthouse. He's accused of blaming God for expressing his opinion to the jury. According to the Herald-Zeitung, Robison told the jury, "I apologize to you folks, but when God tells me I gotta do something, I gotta do it."

We spoke with the State Commission on Judicial Conduct on Friday. Officials couldn't confirm or deny whether or not Judge Robison is being investigated. However, they did say similar actions from a hypothetical scenario could lead to punishment.

"That is an issue that we would definitely investigate and present to the commission as potential misconduct,” said Eric Vinson from the State Commission on Judicial Conduct. “Legally, a judge is really not supposed to be weighing in on the facts of a case.”

According to the Herald-Zeitung, Robison removed himself from the trial before sentencing. Eventually he was replaced by another judge that carried out the remainder of the trial. Romero Perez’s attorney requested a mistrial, but was denied.

Robison is scheduled to return to work in the Comal County Courthouse on January 31st.
