An Alabama third-grader died from the flu

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WBMA) — An Alabama third-grader died from flu-related complications Tuesday night, the school superintendent confirms.

"It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that Zainab Momin, a Pike Road Elementary School 3rd grader, passed away Tuesday night due to the flu," Pike Road Schools Superintendent Dr. Chuck Ledbetter says.

Zainab died after her parents took her to the hospital with flu symptoms and a mounting fever.

Dr. Ledbetter is urging parents to "do the little things that seem inconsequential," such as washing hands, getting the flu vaccine, and keeping sick students at home.

"We're working very hard to protect our children," Dr. Ledbetter said. "We ask you to keep the Momin family in your thoughts and prayers, and also to keep the Pike Road Schools family in your thoughts and prayers."

Dr. Ledbetter is unable to confirm whether or not the child received a flu shot.
