Former Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he still believes former President Barack Obama’s birth certificate is “a forgery.”
Arpaio adds that Congress should create a law mandating that such documents get examined when someone campaigns for president.
“I’m going to tell you again that the document is a forgery document,” he said on WABC Wednesday when asked about Obama’s birth certificate. “And nobody will touch it.”
“I wanted to get it to Congress so they can pass some type of law – regulation – that when somebody runs for president you ought to check their background, so this won’t happen again. But I can’t get anybody – anybody – to look at it.”
Arpaio on Tuesday announced that he will jump into Arizona’s Republican Senate primary to replace retiring Sen. Jeff Flake.
“I have a lot to offer,” he told The Washington Examiner. “I’m a big supporter of President Trump.”
“But I would not be doing this if I thought that I could not win. I’m not here to get my name in the paper, I get that everyday, anyway.”
Maricopa County includes Phoenix and the surrounding suburbs, and Arpaio served as its elected sheriff for 24 years until Democrat Paul Penzone defeated him for the role in 2016.
Trump pardoned Arpaio last year, sparing him from a jail sentence of up to six months after the former law officer was convicted of criminal contempt.
Arpaio was convicted of the charge last year for ignoring a federal court order in a racial-profiling case.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department under Arpaio was ordered to stop detaining immigrants based solely on their immigration status.
Arpaio has long claimed Obama’s birth certificate is fraudulent, a conspiracy theory that Trump also voiced belief in before entering the Oval Office.
The notion that Obama has a fake birth certificate and was born outside the U.S. has been widely debunked by media reports.
