The Department of Justice (DOJ) has started a new investigation of the Clinton Foundation, according to The Hill.
The Hill on Thursday reported that the DOJ’s inquiry is focused on the foundation’s activities during Hillary Clinton’s tenure as secretary of State from 2009 to 2013.
The investigation will focus on whether the organization engaged in any pay-to-play politics or other illegal activities during that period.
Clinton was the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, and the Clinton Foundation is the charitable organization founded by her husband, former President Bill Clinton.
FBI agents in Little Rock, Arkansas have taken the lead into the federal investigation as the foundation was started there.
The FBI has interviewed at least one witness in the last month, and law enforcement officials said more activities are expected in the coming weeks.
The Hill’s sources said that the probe would focus on whether the Clintons promised or performed policy favors in exchange for generosity to their charitable efforts.
The investigation will also examine whether donors made commitments of donations in hopes of securing government outcomes.
Officials said the investigation would also scrutinize if any tax-exempt assets were converted for personal or political use.
Another focus, The Hill’s sources added, would be whether the foundation complied with applicable tax laws.
A witness recently interviewed by the FBI told the publication that the session was “extremely professional and unquestionably thorough.”
The session was concerned with whether donors to the Clintons’ charitable efforts got any favorable treatment from former President Barack Obama’s administration.
The potentially favorable treatment concerned a policy decision that had previously been highlighted in media coverage.
Hillary Clinton’s chief spokesman on Thursday blasted the probe as “disgraceful” and politically motivated.
“Let’s call this what it is: a sham,” Nick Merrill said. “This is a philanthropy that does life-changing work, which Republicans have tried to turn into a political football.”
President Trump has long called Hillary Clinton “crooked,” and he has repeatedly urged the DOJ to investigate her.
Critics have called for more scrutiny of the Clinton Foundation’s fundraising for years, while supporters counter the organization does valuable charitable work.
