These twins were born 18 minutes apart -- in different years

What are the chances of having twins born in different years?

"It's pretty unusual. I would say it's pretty rare," Doctor Seyed Tamjidi told our affiliate KBAK/KBFX. "I've been doing this for 35 years and I've never had this before."

Tamjidi delivered a set of twins at Delano Regional Medical Center in Delano, California, on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. He said that has not happened for as long as he can remember.

Hospital staff said in Kern County the boy was the last baby born in 2017, and his twin sister was the first baby born in 2018.

Joaquin Jr. Ontiveros was born December 31, 2017, at 11:58 p.m. He was 18 inches and 5 pounds, 9 ounces.

Aitana de Jesus Ontiveros was born January 1, 2018, at 12:16 a.m. She is 16 1/2 inches and 4 pounds, 10 ounces.

The mother, Maria Esperanza Flores Rios, said it was a high-risk pregnancy so she feels blessed both babies are healthy.

Her due date was January 27, but she had a c-section scheduled for January 10.

The parents said they are overjoyed with the early surprise.

Every year the hospital collects donations to shower the first baby born in the new year with gifts.

Matthew Cauthron, Marketing Director at Delano Regional Medical Center, said the twins will go home with more than $3,000 worth of baby supplies.

"It's a good way to start the new year," Cauthron said.
