Have you decided that you really don't want to spend a whole bunch of money or be with a lot of people on New Year's Eve? But you don't really want to stay home and do nothing?
Well here is a list of 18 things you can do on New Year's Eve that won't break the bank.
1. Host a Midnight Breakfast:
Instead of having dinner, have breakfast at the stroke of midnight! It technically is morning, so you don't have to feel bad about having bacon, eggs, waffles, pancakes, and mimosas at 12 A.M. (Also remember breakfast is an anytime food!)
2. Have a Board Game Night:
Time to break out the Scrabble, Monopoly, Checkers, Sorry, Uno, Clue, Risk, Connect Four or whatever old-school board game you may have. What better way to ring in the new year than as the 2017 champion of Monopoly? So call up a couple of family members and/or friends and get your competition on!
3. Do Laundry or Clean:
Out with the old in with the new. De-clutter that space for the new year. Toss out any old clothes, books, or papers that you haven't used in 2017. You will feel better on Jan. 1 knowing that you have fresh sheets on your bed and a house smelling like pine trees.
4. Scavenger Hunt
This is a fun one to do with kids or with a romantic partner. Have a scavenger hunt inside your house or in your neighborhood. Put fun little clues everywhere and let the prize be snacks or food--this can keep the kiddies preoccupied until midnight. Or if it's with a lover, you could put clues that deal with significant places of your relationship and at the end of the hunt have a gift waiting.
*Note: If you do this for a girlfriend--she might think you're proposing--so be ready in case she gets a little bit too excited about a NYE scavenger hunt.
5. Do a New Year's Eve Movie Marathon:
What do 'When Harry Met Sally,' 'Bridget Jones' Diary,' 'The Godfather Part II,' 'Ghostbusters II,' 'Trading Places,' 'Sex and the City: The Movie,' 'Boogie Nights,' New Year's Eve' and 'Poseidon' all have in common? They are all set on New Year's Eve! Watch some of your favorite characters ring in the new year in some of the most precarious ways.
6. Go to Church:
Many churches usher in the new year with a 'Watch-Night' service. The service typically includes fellowship activities, food, singing, prayer, and a message or devotional by the pastor or another church leader. Usually, this New Year's Eve service ends at or a little bit after midnight with prayer. Go get some blessings for the new year!
7. Do some Babysitting:
Many parents make plans to go out and celebrate sans the children and they desperately need someone to watch the little munchkins--that's where you come in. Go make some $$$.
8. Drive for Uber/Lyft: There will be drunk people. A lot of drunk people. Help them get home safely by driving them home. Just like baby sitting you will make a lot of money.
9. Go to the gym: The number one new year resolution is to lose weight/get in shape. So why not get a jump on your resolution right at midnight. Go to your favorite gym, pop in a fitness tape or do some yoga at the house.
10. Binge-listen to a Podcast
Binge-watching is soooo 2017! But Binge-listening is in for 2018! Everybody loves a good story, listen to a few good podcasts back to back to back.
11. Have An Open Mic Night:
Invite friends over to show off their talents. Read poetry, sing songs, break out that rap song you recently wrote... just have fun!
12. Have a Barbecue:
Who says it has to be summer to enjoy a good barbecue? Break out the old indoor grill and put some shrimp on the barbie! Or if you are brave, go out in the cold and grill some burgers on the outdoor grill.
13. Have a Fashion Show:
Invite a few friends over and show off some of the new clothes you just got for Christmas. Plan out a wardrobe capsule for the rest of winter. Maybe you can even do a clothes swap. And if you are lucky, one of your friends may just have the perfect sweater--that would go with those new jeans.
14. Watch the Shopping Networks:
Have you ever just sat and watched one of the shopping networks shows on TV? It's hypnotic--the way they convince you that you really need that 12 month shipment of beeswax candles that smell like bacon, or that new tangle-free power washer hose.
15. Go to the Movies:
There are plenty of good movies in theaters right now and New Year's Eve is a great time to take in the last showing of 2017.
16. Go Camping:
Enjoying the outdoors while sitting by the campfire/fire pit, sipping on some hot chocolate, and roasting s'mores could just be your newest tradition for New Year's Eve.
17. Make a Time Capsule:
Write a letter to your younger self or write a letter to your future self. Take some of your favorite pictures from this year and put them away in the capsule until next New Year's Eve.
18. Have your Own Balloon Drop:
Buy a bunch of balloons, blow them up, and place them between a sheet and the ceiling. When the clock strikes midnight, pull on the sheet and watch the balloons drop.
