An online petition is calling for actor Matt Damon’s cameo in the upcoming movie “Ocean’s 8” due to his recent remarks about sexual misconduct.
The petition, which is titled “Sexual Harassment Isn’t a Joke – Remove Matt Damon from Oceans 8,” on Friday boasted 19,348 signatures out of a desired 20,000.
“Damon’s inclusion would trivialize the serious nature of the charges against sexual abusers like [Harvey] Weinstein – a show [of] massive disrespect for the brave women speaking out,” the petition reads, referencing the recently disgraced Hollywood film producer.
“It would also send a terrible message about the inevitability of – and lack of accountability for – sexual harassment in the workplace that four in ten American women experience,” the document adds.
“I’m calling on ‘Oceans 8’ producers George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh to toss Damon’s ‘Oceans 8’ cameo where it belongs: on the cutting room floor. Will you join me?”
“Ocean’s 8” will star an ensemble cast of actresses including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway when it premieres in 2018.
Damon earlier this month faced criticism after suggesting sexual harassment allegations and sexual assault accusations should be treated differently.
“I do believe there’s a spectrum of behavior, right?” he said during an ABC News interview.
“And we’re going to have to figure – you know, there’s a difference between, you know, patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation, right?” Damon continued.
“Both of those behaviors need to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they shouldn’t be conflated, right?”
Hollywood is grappling with the fallout from scores of women accusing Weinstein of sexual misconduct earlier this year.
Weinstein’s subsequent fall from grace in the movie industry has since provoked a global debate over the issue.
Multiple men of power across fields including politics, sports and the media have since faced claims about their past inappropriate behavior toward women.
