If you fail miserably, the holiday season will be filled with stress instead of joy. This becomes increasingly more difficult if you're in a new relationship. The site, Doctor Nerd Love, breaks down the type of gift by the number of dates you've been on. If you've been together through 4 dates or less, you'll be fine with a card or a bottle of wine. The serious gifts don't come until you're 4 to 5 months into the relationship.

Even online dating giant, E-Harmony, offers tips for successful gift-giving. They want people to know that giving is a must. That's not even a question. However, they do warn against not overdoing it. According to their website, you can do that by purchasing a gift that is too expensive or overly intimate. Instead, they say you should customize the gift. Give it meaning. A thoughtless gift could come off as emotionless.
