Actor Jerry Ferrara says he will serve as the New York Knicks’ head scout during the National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise’s upcoming foray into esports.
“It came together naturally,” he told ESPN Thursday. “I’m an avid Knicks fan, and I love gaming.”
“I’m hoping I can help with team chemistry,” Ferrara added of his new role. “And given my background, we’re going to do some cool things with digital so that fans can learn who our players are.”
The Knicks are one of 17 NBA franchises that will draft team next March ahead of a 16-week esports season launching in May.
Gamers will qualify the NBA esports combine by winning 50 games in the pro-am mode of “NBA 2K18” next month.
Ferrara, 38, said his love of the NBA started with video games, noting “Lakes versus Celtics and the NBA Playoffs” on the Sega Genesis during the early 1990s.
“I currently have seven games that I love playing and following,” said Ferrara, who will also serve as a creative consultant for the Knicks.
“But 2K is my No. 1,” the actor, who played Turtle on HBO’s “Entourage,” added. “[I can’t wait to] sit in the war room during the draft.”
“I’m convinced that if I were born ten years later, I’d be doing something in esports. Maybe not a pro gamer but something in this industry.”
Ferrara added he looks forward to examining potential players for the Knicks’ esports team at the franchise’s combine next February.
“NBA2K18” came out last September on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
The game is the nineteenth installment in the popular “NBA 2K” series of simulators about the professional basketball league.
