A retired Indianapolis fertility doctor who was accused of inseminating patients with his own sperm will serve no jail time after pleading guilty to charges that he lied to investigators.
A judge gave Dr. Donald Cline, 79, a one-year suspended sentence, but also ruled that what he did justified having a felony criminal record.
(Only a one year suspended sentence???)
I know you are shaking your head but let’s go back, how did we get here?
In 2014, the adult children of the Cline's former patients, filed a complaint with the Indiana attorney general's office.
They had a sneaky suspicion that Cline had inseminated some of his patients with his own sperm.
Of course, Cline denied it.
However, the paternity tests showed that Cline is likely the biological father of at least two of his patients' children.
Those children also claim that he may be the father of 20 others.
According to court documents, Cline told six adults, who believed that he was their dad, that he had donated his own sperm about 50 times starting in the 1970s.
He told his patients that the sperem they were receiving was coming from medical or dental residents or medical students. He also told them that no single donor's sperm was used more than three times.
Initially, Cline plead guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice and faced up to three years in prison on each charge.
But because Indiana doesn't specifically prohibit fertility doctors from using their own sperm no other charges were filed against Cline.
