San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee died early Tuesday at age 65, according to his office.
"It is with profound sadness and terrible grief that we confirm that Mayor Edwin M. Lee passed away on Tuesday, December 12 at 1:11 a.m. at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital," the statement read. "Family, friends and colleagues were at his side. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Anita, his two daughters, Brianna and Tania, and his family."
No cause of death was immediately given.
London Breed, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, is now the city's acting mayor.
Lee, then a city administrator, was appointed as mayor by the Board of Supervisors in January 2011 after former Mayor Gavin Newsom resigned to become California's lieutenant governor. He became San Francisco's 43rd mayor and the first Asian-American to hold the post.
Lee won a full term as mayor in November 2011 and was re-elected in 2015.
