White House maintenance work orders this year show that the iconic building suffered from vermin struggles this year, according to News4.
News4 on Thursday reported that pest problems were among hundreds of 2017 filings to the General Services Administration (GSA) it obtained.
Maintenance workers were asked to address reports of mice intruding upon the White House Navy mess food service area and the building’s Situation Room.
The White House also had four reported cockroach infestations on its grounds this year, and a complaint about ants in the chief of staff’s office.
One work order showed a request to replace the toilet seat in the Oval Office late last January, asking that the project be finished “after hours please.”
Another request urged federal maintenance workers to finish the legs of two “Martha Washington chairs” in Vice President Mike Pence’s West Wing office.
The ask recommended that the work on the chairs – which sit in front of an office fireplace – be completed in mid-April during a week when Pence was traveling overseas.
A later request also sought the installation of a DirectTV satellite DVR and TV system in Pence’s office.
National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster once requested a decorator, and former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer also asked that changes occur in his office.
Spicer requested that new furniture be placed inside his office after President Trump’s Inauguration last January, and he also wanted fresh pictures hung there.
Former GSA Inspector General Brian Miller on Thursday said that the agency has “an enormous job” maintaining the White House.
“GSA hires contractors and subcontractors for the [maintenance] work,” he said. “Then the agency must watch over the contractors.”
“They are old buildings,” added Miller, whose former office formally monitors the GSA’s performance. “Any of us who have old houses know old houses need a lot of work.”
GSA records state that the agency spends as much as $100,000 annually in maintenance costs related to White House repairs.
The costs are based on an estimate of $2.13 per square foot in yearly maintenance costs for all GSA buildings in Washington, D.C.
