The former Twitter employee who recently deactivated President Trump’s account on the social media platform has revealed himself in a new interview.
Bahtiyar Duysak on Wednesday told TechCrunch about briefly shuttering Trump’s handle while working in customer support for Twitter’s Trust and Safety division.
“I didn’t hack anyone,” he said, calling the incident “a mistake” as he never expected Trump’s account would truly get deactivated.
“I didn’t do anything I was not authorized to do,” Duysak added in Germany. “I didn’t got to any site I was not supposed to go to. I didn’t break any rules.”
“I didn’t do any crime or anything evil, but I feel like Pablo Escobar, and slowly it’s getting really annoying.”
Twitter’s Trust and Safety division addresses complaints from users regarding harassment, offensive or illegal tweets, or impersonation from other people on the service.
Duysak said that during his last day at Twitter on Nov. 2, he began the process to deactivate Trump’s account after receiving a complaint on it but did not expect it would happen.
Twitter said in a tweet the following day that it had “implemented safeguards to prevent this from happening again.”
Duysak was working for Twitter as a contractor at the time of the deactivation, finishing the last part of his stay in the U.S. via a work and study visa.
The former Twitter employee was born and raised in Germany, and the twenty-something comes from a family with Turkish roots.
Critics have attacked Twitter for not deactivating Trump’s account after some of his more controversial tweets seemingly violated the company’s terms of service.
Twitter said in June that some tweets that appear to be violations are “newsworthy” and subsequently in the public interest to keep up.
