Thousands of dollars in jewelry and cash were stolen from a store in Falls Church, Virginia. The owner, Tony Nguyen, didn’t notice until much later. Camera footage later revealed how the thieves snuck off with a reported $200,000 in jewelry and cash.
“They asked me to get 24k from that showcase,” said Nguyen. “Two come in first and then another and then another two come in and block my view.”
It was a typical Friday for Nguyen. All of a sudden, a large crowd of seven entered the store.
Once the group got his attention, they had other plans up their sleeves.
When Nguyen wasn’t looking, one woman slipped away.
“She come down here like she going to the restroom and then she crawled down here,” said Nguyen.
She was able to find Nguyen’s unlocked safe and grab jewelry and cash.
In the footage, it appears she hid the goods underneath her long skirt.
“Gold, bangles, bracelets,” said Nguyen.
“How much money do you think you lost?” asked ABC7’s Anna-Lysa Gayle.
“I think like $200K,” said Nguyen.
The woman then discreetly returns to the main part of the store, unnoticed and unbothered.
“I’m so shocked, after two days I found out,” said Nguyen.
This isn’t the first time Nguyen fell victim to theft. According to him, back in February someone also stole roughly $70,000 of jewelry in a similar manner, from behind the counter while he was distracted.
He’s offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
Falls Church police say the case is similar to other cases in California and Pennsylvania.
Detectives have been in contact with investigators in those jurisdictions.
