FILE - The Pentagon is seen in this aerial view in Washington, in this March 27, 2008 file photo. The Pentagon has revised its Law of War guidelines to remove wording that could permit U.S. military commanders to treat war correspondents as “unprivileged belligerents” if they think the journalists are sympathizing or cooperating with enemy forces. The amended manual, published on July 22, 2016, also drops wording that equated journalism with spying. (AP Photo/Charles Dharapak, File)

The Pentagon accidentally retweeted a call for Trump's resignation

A tweet calling for President Donald Trump's resignation was accidentally retweeted from the Defense Department's official Twitter account.

The retweet was quickly deleted and Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning said it "would not be endorsed by the Department of Defense," in a statement.

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White also tweeted a similar message, and said an "authorized user" of the Defense Department's Twitter account "erroneously" retweeted the message and after catching the mistake "immediately deleted it."

Someone with the Twitter handle @ProudResister had originally tweeted the message, which said, "The solution is simple. Roy Moore: Step down from the race. Al Franken: Resign from congress. Donald Trump: Resign from the presidency. GOP: Stop making sexual assault a partisan issue. It’s a crime as is your hypocrisy.”

The Pentagon's Twitter account has over 5 million followers.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
