The Pentagon accidentally retweeted a call for Trump's resignation

A tweet calling for President Donald Trump's resignation was accidentally retweeted from the Defense Department's official Twitter account.

The retweet was quickly deleted and Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning said it "would not be endorsed by the Department of Defense," in a statement.

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White also tweeted a similar message, and said an "authorized user" of the Defense Department's Twitter account "erroneously" retweeted the message and after catching the mistake "immediately deleted it."

Someone with the Twitter handle @ProudResister had originally tweeted the message, which said, "The solution is simple. Roy Moore: Step down from the race. Al Franken: Resign from congress. Donald Trump: Resign from the presidency. GOP: Stop making sexual assault a partisan issue. It’s a crime as is your hypocrisy.”

The Pentagon's Twitter account has over 5 million followers.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
