“The Wrinkle in Time” is a beloved book and Ava DuVernay is going to bring it to the big screen in a beautiful and incredible adaptation — and actress Akemi Look is here for the ride. Akemi Look will be in that and currently stars in The Man From Earth: Holocene which can be seen in theaters now. So she is no stranger to big budget movies and the role that directorial decisions can play in them. She’s the perfect person then to come on CircaPop Live and discuss— with Shira Lazar and Ryan Mitchell — the new Justice League movie. Specifically: how so darned sexist the Amazonian costumes are in it, especially compared to Patti Jenkins’ Wonder Woman movie! Yeesh!

One just has to take a look at the costumes side by side to see the issue. Patti Jenkins’ Amazons are clad in glorious armor covering everything their entire body except the legs and arms. Zack Snyder’s Amazons on the other hand seems to be wearing a metallic bathing suit almost. Akemi Look talks about how a.) Zack Snyder’s film’s costume doesn’t even cover the Amazons’ vital organs and b.) that is a perfect illustration of the male gaze vs. the female gaze. Patti Jenkins’ has these incredible warriors, but Zack Snyder has something intended to be gawked. Not great! What do you think though? Let us know in the comments!
