LA is becoming the Mecca of novelty themed bars, and I'm in love.
Just across the street from the Star Wars-inspired 'Scum and Villiany Cantina', the latest addition to the Hollywood dressed-up bar scene is 'Beetle House' -- a drinkable shrine to all things Tim Burton. The second story walk-up is covered wall to wall in Burton-inspired set pieces, art, and even costumed actors.
Walking through Beetle House is itself a trivia game of naming which movies inspired which parts, with representations of The Nightmare Before Christmas next to Sleepy Hallow, Beetlejuice and Mars Attacks (underrated!)
And of course no theme bar would be complete without a killer technicolor drink menu of creepy-cool delights.
Here’s just three of the House favorites from the bar where 'every day is Halloween.'
1. The Beetle's Juice
- Muddled blackberry and limes
- Blackberry schnapps
- Angostura bitters
- Splash of cranberry
Inspired by Burton's 1988 film Beetlejuice, this drink is made to look like you're drinking a crushed up beetle. Yum?

Sweet and refreshing, this drink is undoubtedly the crowd favorite with more than 300 made per night.
Unclear if after three of these Beetlejuice himself will appear, but an Uber definitely should.
2. This is Halloween
- Pumpkin liqueur
- Sour apple pucker
- Apple cider
Inspired by 1993's The Nightmare Before Christmas, this drink is fall in a glass.

Move over pumpkin spice everything, this is going to be your new go to winter warm-up drink. With pumpkin liqueur (which I didn't even know existed) this feels as much like Halloween as eating pumpkin pie, while trick or treating, while watching a scary movie, while drinking too much and embarrassing yourself in front of your friends. (Based on a true story)
P.S. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween movie. Come at me on Twitter if you disagree -- I'm ready to go.
3. The Big Fish Bowl
- Malibu Rum
- Blue Curacao liqueur
- Sweet-and-sour mix
- Pineapple juice
- Nerd candy
- Swedish Fish
Inspired by 2003's Big Fish, this is the ostentatious crowning jewel of the Beetle House bar.

Featuring 'a lot of candy and a lot of liquor,' the Swedish fish in this drink are almost certainly very drunk. Bar manager Dan McDonald said of the fogging drink that after one person orders it, it sells across the whole bar.
I dare you to find a more instagram-able cocktail in Hollywood.
Beetle House has been open since May (with its counterpart in NYC open since April) and as of November 1st, features all new decorations focused around The Nightmare Before Christmas. The bar is open Tuesday through Sunday, 5 p.m.-12:30 a.m., so I know where I'm going to kicking off the (drinking) holidays.
