It was three years ago when Gemma Stafford, an Irish-born professional chef behind the YouTube account Bigger Bolder Baking, was asked how to bake a cake without an oven.
“I thought to myself, ‘That’s not possible,’ but then I stood back and thought, ‘why don’t I come up with an alternative way of doing that?’” said Stafford, who then first made her first mug cake in a microwave. It took less than 10 minutes.
Since then, Stafford’s YouTube channel has grown immensely – her accessible, easy-to-follow videos of mug meals and other treats have garnered more than 1.4 million subscribers and millions of views on popular videos. Her most popular video, the non-machine-made ice cream recipe with only two ingredients, has more than 9.5 million views.
“I like to take out the element of fear with my recipes,” Stafford said. “I like to make them really accessible for everybody.”
For the Circa staff, Stafford demonstrated how to make a mugrito (burrito in a mug) and pecan pie in a mug, all of which took less than 15 minutes – although preparing the ingredients might take you longer depending on your pantry inventory. If you want to try it yourself and need detailed instructions, all recipes are free and available on Gemma’s website and her YouTube channel.
