The true history of witches is much more complicated than green faces, pointy hats, and broomsticks but rather started out with the demonizing of women priestesses.
The change happened mainly with the influx of monotheistic religions and warrior based cultures. The specification of only women being witches didn't happen until the Catholic Church wrote Malleus Maleficarum, a manual that detailed the process of determining who is a witch and how to punish them.
At the time of its release the Malleus Maleficarum was the most widely read book second only to the Bible.
Today modern witches abound with the largest world population of practicing witches residing in America.
