The hard drive from Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock's laptop reportedly is missing

A laptop computer recovered from the hotel room of the man behind the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas was missing its hard drive, according to ABC News.

ABC News on Wednesday reported that the device’s state deprives investigators of a potential key source of information about Stephen Paddock’s motive for the attack.

Sources told ABC News that Paddock is believed to have removed the hard drive before fatally shooting himself during the Oct. 1 incident.

ABC News’s sources added that the device has not yet been recovered following the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

One source said that investigators examining Paddock’s background also discovered that he bought software designed to erase files from a hard drive.

The individual added that without the hard drive to scrutinize it is impossible knowing whether Paddock ever used the software.

Investigators remain uncertain about what inspired Paddock to begin firing upon an outdoor concert earlier this month.

The absence of substantial digital clues about the crime also has them struggling what prompted Paddock to go on his rampage.

Paddock opened fire on the Route 91 Harvest music festival from his 32nd floor hotel room at the nearby Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino the evening of Oct. 1.

The shooting killed at least 58 people and wounded at least over 500 others, reigniting national debate over gun control.

Paddock has since been described as a frequent gambler who kept a low profile while preparing for the bloodshed.

A source told ABC News that Paddock’s finances seemingly did not challenge him, adding that the shooter settled all his casino debts before the massacre.

Paddock’s relationships, health, finances and past travel have so far not yielded an inspiration for the shooting.

The gunman also did not leave behind any known writings justifying his actions, separating him from other mass shooters who have done so.
