There's never a bad time to visit Disneyland, but the mouse house keeps giving us reasons to make the special trip.

For October, it's all about Disney's Halloween Time Celebration, and for the first time California Adventure is getting in on the action. But does it merit the extra trip before they roll out the Christmas decorations in November?

As far as scare factor, you have to remember these are family parks.

That being said, as a kid, I remember the Haunted Mansion being pretty scary. And besides, one of best parts of Halloween is seeing the mansion turned into 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'.

Another awesome Halloween ride update is 'Space Mountain' becoming 'Ghost Galaxy', which has you whipping past space ghosts with really dramatic horror music that makes it feel like the movie Event Horizon, which is rad.

The creativity in the parks is limited by the fact that they really only have a few Halloween-appropriate Disney properties, but I wish they’d tap into some cult favorites like' Halloweentown', or have 'Hocus Pocus' with witches running around or something like that.

But I guess it doesn’t lend itself to being turned into Mickey ears quite as easily, so I guess I get it.

In terms of value, Disneyland is very pricey, and it’s never going to get cheaper. I remember that one year where they let you come for free on your birthday as the best thing ever, and it didn't last.

Even their free fast pass system won’t allow you to do everything because you have to wait hours between passes. And of course it is even harder if you have a park-hopper ticket, which has you running between two parks with almost double the attractions.

You really need about three days to do everything.

California Adventure pulled out some neat decorations for its first year at bat as a Halloween attraction. Outside there’s a massive sign with Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas, and then tons of purple lights throughout the Main Street and a new spooked out Cars Land.

As an added bonus, you can actually drink beer at California Adventure, so you can grab an Oktoberfest brew from the Karl Strauss beer truck to top off your night.

Overall, I’d say Disney’s Halloween time is pretty underrated. Everybody knows the park is awesome around Christmas, but I’ll take Nightmare Before Christmas over any other holiday movie experience.

Is it worth it just for California Adventure decorations? No. Is Disneyland worth it for the few ride updates? Yes.
