'Riverdale' star Lili Reinhart is catching heat over her 'insensitive' Halloween costume

Lili Reinhart of "Riverdale" fame caught some flak recently after being accused of joking about blackface in a tweet about her Halloween costume.

Reinhart, who is well-known for her creative make up skills, posted a picture of what appears to be a person dressed in a black demon costume with a painted black face.

"Found my Halloween costume!!" said the 22-year-old star's caption. "Inspired by the color of my soul."

Blogger Perez Hilton claimed Reinhart "was joking about doing blackface for Halloween" in a tweet reply.

Blackface was a style of makeup used by non-black actors to portray black people, often in racial stereotypes, in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Reinhart claimed she did not intend to offend anyone with the picture.

"I did not mean for my tweet to come off that way," she tweeted on Sunday. "I can see how it was interpreted as being insensitive, completely. I saw the pic on a Halloween Instagram and didn't think it would be interpreted as being racially insensitive."

In addition to the backlash, some of Reinhart's fans defended the star, claiming she was not engaging in blackface to begin with.
