This deaf gamer uses Twitch to teach others about disability

Meet Chris Robinson, a deaf streamer otherwise known on Twitch as DeafGamersTV.

Chris has been streaming live gameplay for as long as Twitch has been around, playing all types of games on all different consoles. But three years ago, he started DeafGamersTV to try and help the deaf community by showing that you aren’t limited by your disability.

Since it’s inception, the channel has sought to increase deaf awareness, and to help the gaming industry understand the needs of those with hearing disabilities. Factors such as better subtitles, and controls over how to read descriptions are things that the average gamer might take for granted, but are imperative to understanding the story of a game for those that rely solely on the screen.

I think it’s important to keep educating people until it makes sense that this is just a person who happens to not be able to hear, and that’s all it is.
Chris Robinson, DeafGamersTV

Chris himself has battled with depression and considered giving up, but his community always urged him to press on and keep creating content as leading by example. For Chris, the message is one of importance for both those with and without disabilities; disability doesn't mean you can't.

You can get involved with DeafGamersTV on Twitch by clicking here, and be sure to check out the 'Streaming with Disabilities' panel at TwitchCon with Chris.
