Malaysia AirAsia Turnback

Passengers described the chaos as an AirAsia jetliner rapidly descended 24,000 feet

Passengers on an Indonesia AirAsia jetliner described a scene of chaos as the aircraft rapidly descended 24,000 feet on Sunday while traveling from Australia to Bali. Released video shows a panicked flight crew announcing an emergency, followed by the dropping of oxygen masks from the ceiling.

One passenger, Nicole, whose last name was not given, said that language barriers heightened the intensity of the situation.

"It was a bit scary, just a bit. A lot of people were really upset. We didn't know what was happening because all of the voice recordings on the plane were in every language but English."

Nicole was one of the 145 passengers on flight QZ535, which eventually landed safely in the Australian city of Perth. The reason for the emergency remains unclear, though, NBC News said that the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, said it was investigating the airliner's depressurization.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
