Rep. Keith Ellison says that rapper Eminem is “doing the right thing” criticizing President Trump in his music.
“Let me tell you, Eminem and many artists make an important cultural contribution,” he told TMZ Wednesday.
“I really have my hat off to Eminem,” Ellison added. “He’s doing what we expect artists to do. So many artists have made a way to inspire people to greater citizen activism.”
“What Eminem is doing is just being true to his art, which is to inspire and motivate. So I’m grateful to him for that.”
Ellison, who is the Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) deputy chairman, added he hopes other rappers follow Eminem’s example.
“You know, Eminem could be the Colin Kaepernick of the rap world if he just keeps it up,” he said, referencing the National Football League (NFL) free agent. “We need him to do that.”
Eminem on Tuesday unleashed a furious, four-and-a-half-minute freestyle rap about Trump during the BET Hip Hop Awards.
The rapper called Trump a “kamikaze that will probably cause a nuclear holocaust” and a “racist grandpa.”
Eminem additionally demanded that his listeners choose between enjoying his output or backing Trump.
“Any fan of mine who’s a supporter of his, I’m drawing in the sand a line – you’re either for or against,” he said.
“And if you can’t decide who you like more and you’re split on who you should stand beside, I’ll do it for you with this: f—k you.”
