It's time to celebrate 'International Day of the Girl Child'

October 11, 2017 is the “International Day of the Girl Child.” Many people took to Twitter using the hashtag #InternationalDayoftheGirl, #IDG2017, or #DayoftheGirl to share art and stories, raise awareness, and celebrate.

Some celebrities and human rights organizations used the day to discuss gender equality, equal rights, and education for girls.

According to dayofthegirl.org, the United Nations declared October 11th as the International Day of the Girl Child because of youth advocacy around the world. It’s mission is “to help galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls’ lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential.” Day of the Girl Child was first celebrated in 2011.
