Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and comedian Larry David discovered that they are distant cousins during a recent television broadcast.
Host Henry Louis Gates, Jr. revealed during late Tuesday’s Season 4 premiere of PBS’ "Finding Your Roots" that David and Sanders are likely third or fourth cousins.
“We match your DNA against everybody who’s been in any of my series,” Gates told David. “If you have long, identical stretches, that means you are cousins.”
“I hope it’s a good athlete,” David quipped before finding out it was Sanders. “What the hell? Oh, that’s so funny. That is really funny. That is amazing. All right, cousin Bernie.”
Sanders, a 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, initially voice disbelief before finding out he is related to David.
“It’s true?” he asked, prompting Gates to confirm the discovery. “You’re kidding. Oh my god. That is unbelievable.”
“People say to me, you know, they talk about Larry David and I say, ‘he does a better Bernie Sanders than I do,’” Sanders said before erupting in laughter. “Oh my god.”
Some Twitter users on Wednesday expressed amazement that Sanders and David are remotely related.

David revealed he was tangentially related to Sanders in July during a press conference promoting HBO’s "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
“I thought there must be some connection,” he said, adding he was “very happy” to find one. “I love Bernie.”
David repeatedly played Sanders in sketches on NBC’s "Saturday Night Live" during the 2016 presidential race.
