Russell Westbrook signs extension with Oklahoma City Thunder

Russell Westbrook has signed a five-year extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder, according to our affiliate FOX 25 News.

The Thunder announced on Sept. 29 that Westbrook has agreed to sign a five-year, $205 million contract with the team. The deal begins with the 2018-2019 season as Westbrook has opted to sign the Designated Player Veteran Extension. The extension allows Westbrook to sign for 35 percent of the salary cap and five additional season. His total guaranteed contract will come to six seasons and $235 million, the largest guaranteed contract in NBA history according to ESPN.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, there is no place I would rather be than Oklahoma City.” Westbrook said. "When you play in Oklahoma City you play in front of the best fans in the world, I’m looking forward to bringing everything I’ve got, for them, this city and for this organization. WHY NOT?”

Thunder Chairman Clay Bennett said Westbrook represents everything they could have hoped for when building a team.

"His character, integrity and relentless drive have been a great unifier that has deeply and positively affected the spirit of our fans inside our arena, in our classrooms and in our neighborhoods. We recognize and deeply appreciate Russell’s rare and unique abilities as he leads the Oklahoma City Thunder, but also understand his presence and impact on our community will be felt for decades to come," Bennett said.

Thunder General Manager Sam Presti said the organization was lucky to have an athlete like Westbrook.

“Russell’s commitment to the Thunder organization since its inception in 2008 has helped propel us to great heights and stare down great challenges over our first decade.” Presti said. "To have him cement his legacy as a leader as we enter into our 10th season in Oklahoma City is extraordinary."

The Thunder made several big moves this off-season, trading for both Paul George and Carmelo Anthony. Training camp for the team kicked off Sept. 26. The team kicks off the season Oct. 19 at home against the Knicks.
