DirecTV is offering refunds to fans upset over the NFL anthem protests

DirecTV is offering unprecedented refunds for National Football League (NFL) fans upset by the organization’s ongoing protests over the national anthem, a source told ESPN.

ESPN on Tuesday reported that NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers can cancel their package if they inform DirecTV they are doing so due to the recent demonstrations.

AT&T, which owns DirecTV, typically mandates fans cannot cancel their subscriptions once the NFL season starts.

The company decided to change the policy, however, due to the sensitivity surrounding the NFL’s national anthem issues.

NFL Sunday ticket allows fans to get out-of-market games, and it costs approximately $280 for a subscription.

Some Twitter users on Wednesday praised DirecTV’s move, while others criticized the exemption, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The NFL has been beset by protests during the national anthem after President Trump criticized the practice during a recent campaign rally.

Roughly 180 players opted not to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the NFL’s Week 3, including three teams whose rosters did not come to the sidelines for the song.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, the Seattle Seahawks and the Tennessee Titans were all absent during the national anthem before their respective games last weekend.

The Dallas Cowboys’ squad, meanwhile, chose to kneel in unison before the song during ahead of their contest late Monday.

Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the national anthem in 2016 to protest police treatment of America’s minorities.

Trump on Tuesday reiterated his distaste for the display before vowing he is not “preoccupied with the NFL” rather than other issues.

“I don’t think you can disrespect our country, our flag, our national anthem,” he said during a joint press conference with Spanish Prime Minister Mariana Rajoy.

“To me, the NFL situation is a very important situation,” Trump continued. “I’ve heard that before about, ‘Was I preoccupied?’ Not at all, not at all.”

“I have plenty of time on my hands. All I do is work. And to be honest with you, that’s an important part of working, it’s called respect for our country.”
