Former National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn is facing a "tremendous financial burden" sustaining a legal team to defend himself in the ongoing Trump Russia election probe, which has forced his family to set up a legal defense fund in his name, according to a website set up by his siblings.
Flynn is one of several key subjects in the ongoing investigation headed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who was appointed to investigate the extent of Russia's interference in the 2016 election. Flynn is also being pursued by some members of Congress in the House and Senate committees who are investigating the charges.
His brother Joe Flynn and sister Barbara Redgate said in a statement obtained by Circa that his family is struggling to make ends meet. They set up Flynn's Legal Defense Fund hoping to alleviate the ongoing burden so he can continue his defense.
"The various investigations arising out of the 2016 presidential election have placed a tremendous financial burden on our brother Mike and his family," the statement released by his siblings Monday said. "The enormous expense of attorneys' fees and other related expenses far exceed their ability to pay. To help ensure that he can defend himself, we have set up a legal defense fund, and we are asking Mike's supporters, veterans, and all people of goodwill to contribute whatever amount they can to this fund. Mike devoted 33 years of his life to our country serving in the United States Army, spending years away from his family while he fought this nation's battles overseas, including the War On Terror."
Flynn who has remained relatively quiet since the ongoing investigation posted a statement Monday on his Twitter account thanking his family and his supporters.
A family friend of Flynn's who spoke with Circa said this, "has been one of the most difficult times in his family's life and this was a difficult decision for him to make."
Another source close to Flynn said, "the legal defense fund will not accept contributions from foreign nationals and will not accept anonymous contributions. Nor will it accept funds from the Trump campaign or Trump Organization."
