A Columbus, Ohio, police officer was temporarily relieved of duty after a violent arrest

Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs has pulled one officer from the Sept. 1 arrest of Timothy Davis, our affiliate WSYX/WTTE reported.

The decision came after the chief watched body camera video of the arrest and heard comments the officer made. She also announced an internal affairs investigation into the officer.

The audio from the video released of the incident includes an officer saying: "Why did we tase him? Why didn't we choke the (expletive) life out of him?"

"The officer has been relieved of duty and we have taken his badge and gun away from him until we know whether or not those comments reflect the type of behavior he exhibits out there on the streets towards our citizens," Jacobs said.

Jacobs said the department will inform the public when the investigation is finished.

"This kind of language is totally inappropriate, unprofessional and does not reflect the core values of the Division of Police and the members of this division who go out there every day to serve and protect," Jacobs said.

Mayor Andrew Ginther and Columbus City Council members condemned the words of the officer on the video and supported Jacobs' decision. In a brief Wednesday press conference, the mayor also lauded wok done by Columbus officers, including their handling of the shooting at Columbus Scioto school and Wednesday when officers helped a man off a ledge of a downtown parking garage.

“I have reviewed the body-worn camera video, and I am incredibly bothered by the words of the officer in question," Ginther said. "I strongly support Chief Jacobs' decision to remove the officer from duty. This is unacceptable behavior for Columbus police officers – or any city employee – and cannot be tolerated. It goes against our community’s values. I appreciate Chief Jacobs' transparency, and her and swift action in this matter.”
