Hillary Clinton says Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) “caused lasting damage” to her 2016 presidential campaign, according to CNN.
CNN reported Tuesday that Clinton also accuses Sanders of “paving the way” for President Trump to dub her “Crooked Hillary” last year.
Clinton levels the charges against Sanders in excerpts from her upcoming book “What Happened,” which is scheduled for a Sept. 12 release.
Trump defeated Clinton for the presidency last November after she bested Sanders for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.
“[Sanders] had to resort to innuendo and impugning my character,” she says in the excerpts, noting they “agreed on so much” otherwise.
“When I finally challenged Bernie during a debate to name a single time I changed a position or a vote because of a financial contribution, he couldn’t come up with anything,” Clinton continues.
“Nonetheless, his attacks caused lasting damage, making it harder to unify the progressives in the general election and paving the way for Trump’s ‘Crooked Hillary’ campaign.”
CNN reported that the excerpts were first posted by a pro-Clinton Twitter account and then by a user on a Clinton “super volunteer” Facebook page.
Clinton also hammers Sanders, an Independent, for campaigning as a Democrat during the party’s 2016 presidential primary.
“[Sanders] isn’t a Democrat,” she says. “That’s not a smear, that’s what he says.”
“He didn’t get into the race to make sure a Democrat won the White House, he got in to disrupt the Democratic Party.”
Clinton adds that former President Barack Obama, a Democrat, advised her to “grit my teeth and lay off Bernie as much as I could.”
“I felt like I was in a straightjacket,” says Clinton, who served as Obama’s secretary of State.
Sanders campaigned as a progressive alternative to Clinton last year, and he frequently questioned Clinton’s paid speeches to Wall Street firms during their primary competition.
Trump repeatedly called Clinton “Crooked Hillary” during the 2016 general election, ultimately defeating her for the presidency and succeeding Obama.
