Virtual reality is becoming more accessible as time passes and many developers are using this to create the most immersive games to date. Some of these, however, are not meant to be played for leisure. Here are some of the scariest VR games available to play right now.
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood | PlayStation VR
This title puts you on a horror-themed roller coaster at a carnival amusement park. Your cart eventually goes off course into a closed-off portion of the ride, where you eventually must shoot your way through multiple levels consisting of objects and enemies. The game moves at a very high-speed and takes a considerable amount of skill to beat. A combination of jump-scares and objective movement creates an immersive experience that doesn't give much time to relax.
Emily Wants to Play | Oculus Rift, HTC Vive
Indie developer Shawn Hitchcock initially released this game in 2015. It was adapted into VR format in August of last year and manages to bring a new level of horror to the already terrifying title. You play as a pizza delivery man who is on his final stop of the night. The lights are on in the house and the door is slightly open, prompting your character to walk in the door, which then closes and locks behind you. Throughout the night, you must play a series of games with the dolls in the house to survive and discover why you have been trapped in the home. A sequel called Emily Wants to Play Too is already in development.
Here They Lie | PlayStation VR
Developed by Tangentleman, this game relies less on sudden loud noises and on-screen appearances to create a scary experience. It rather adopts a more subtle approach with drawn-out sequences and slow, yet unnerving movements. More than anything, this title proves to be a psychological horror game. You play as a character in a dream-like world devoid of most color, save for specific objects and figures. With no prior background knowledge, the fear roots in the uncertainty of location and identity. As you make your way through the world and unravel the secrets to your whereabouts, strange and looming monsters make it no easy task.
The Brookhaven Experiment | Oculus Rift, HTC Vive
This survival shooter drops you in a world that is nearly ending and is on the brink of being overrun by horrific monsters. Wave by wave, the player must utilize a variety of weapons to try and stop the apocalypse from taking place. The creatures that come at you vary in size and appearance, moving toward you at a relatively moderate pace. Don't be fooled, however. Despite the somewhat slower approach relative to other shooters, these monsters can appear from any direction, keeping the player on guard at all times.
Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul | Oculus Rift, HTC Vive
Based on the film series of the same name, this title brings the theme of the original film into its gameplay. Your character is seen exploring a peculiar house in a local neighborhood, only to discover darker secrets within. Like other survival/mystery games of this type, you must search the house for clues as to what exactly lies inside and make your way through the entire night. With just a flashlight to start, no displays or HUDs are located on the screen, fully completing the envelopment of the player in this world.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard | PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive
The latest installment of Capcom's renowned gaming series, this title returns to the roots of the horror that started it all, after deviating with more action-based games. This is the first Resident Evil title to be featured on a VR platform and its debut performance is praised as the scariest of its kind out right now. In this game, you play as a man named Ethan searching for his wife, Mia. He comes across a neglected plantation owned by the Baker family and, upon further searching, realizes there is more to this family than meets the eye. Ethan eventually must fight his way out of the area against the Bakers and a humanoid form of bacteria called the "Molded." With its stellar gameplay and perfectly timed jumpscares, this title definitely finds itself at the top of the scariest VR games on the market right now.
