A Georgia police officer told a woman he pulled over that 'We only kill black people'

A police officer in Cobb County, Georgia was caught on camera telling a woman at a traffic stop, "we only kill black people."

Mike Register, chief of the Cobb County Police Department, told the Atlanta station WSB-TV that after the news channel submitted an open records request, he watched the footage himself.

In the video, the officer has just pulled over a woman for a DUI stop, Register said. In an apparent attempt to reassure her that it was okay to put her hands down, the officer tells her:

“Remember, we only kill black people. We only kill black people, right?”

The statement triggered an internal investigation of the officer, whom Register identified as Lt. Greg Abbott.

According to WSB-TV, Register said Abbott has been assigned to administrative duties in the interim.

“No matter what context it was said, it shouldn’t have been said,” Register told WSB-TV.
