The couple was on Interstate-10 in Houston on Tuesday, en route to up a family member who was dealing with flooding when they got turned around because of high water.
Then, they suddenly saw a horrifying scene unfold right in front of them.
Floodwaters had picked up an elderly man's SUV and the vehicle was being sweeping it away.
"My heart started beating fast," Castillo said to CNN during a phone interview. "Somebody said, 'Let's form a chain.'"So, they did. Castillo and several other drivers from nearby vehicles linked arms and inched closer towards the submerged SUV.
The good Samaritans were eventually able to get the SUV's door open and get the man to safety.
