Michael Phelps and his wife are expecting their second child

Michael Phelps and his wife Nicole Johnson are expecting their second bundle of joy.

The couple announced the exciting news in matching social media posts on Tuesday.

"Number 2 on the way!!!! So excited!! Wonder if it's a boy or a girl??" Phelps captioned a photo of Johnson and their 1-year-old son Boomer.

In a separate Instagram post Nicole added, "Lil man's going to be a Big Brother!!!”

The couple welcomed Boomer into the world in May 2016 and married later that year.

Earlier this year Phelps told PEOPLE that he and Johnson were hoping to grow their family.

"We are so fortunate to have a healthy and happy baby and hopefully more coming soon, but we don’t know when,” Phelps said.

The retired swimmer recently made headlines after taking on a virtual shark as part of a Discovery Channel "Shark Week" event.
