Facebook 'safety check' is helping Texans affected by Harvey

Tropical Storm Harvey has threatened the safety of people across Southern Texas and that leaves loved ones wondering if those in its path are out of harm's way.

"They've mostly just told us to stay put, we've filled our bath tubs because we're afraid we're going to lose water again, so we can go to the bathroom and we've stocked up on dry food, but that's pretty much all we can do,” explained Andrea Parker, a resident in Houston.

Andrea Parker, a 23-year-old, is one of the millions facing the dangers of Harvey.

"They're evacuating just south of us so we're sort of like, 'Are we going to be told to evacuate soon or not?'" Parker told Circa's affiliate WICS.

Officials are urging everyone in Parker’s city to stay indoors.

This comes after flooding has taken over the roadways.

Parker worried that if she lost power, she wouldn't be able to let her friends and family know she was okay.

This led to her going on Facebook and using a feature called "safety check."

She did this to let her friends know, she's okay.

"I told my parents if we lose power, that would be the place to look because it's just a blanket area they can see instead of texting 50 people in my contact list,” Parker said.

She's not the only one in Texas using the safety feature.

The safety check map is covered in red dots, with people in the area affected by Harvey posting.

These posts range from people saying they are okay, to asking for help.

Law enforcement said this feature can be a big help.

"If we were conducting a missing person’s investigation of some type and we were able to use the resource of Facebook to determine whether an individual had checked in, yes it would be beneficial for law enforcement," explained Ken Scarlette, with Springfield Police.
