Melissa Ann McCarthy was born in Plainfield, Illinois on August 26, 1970... but I can't imagine ever thinking of her as plain.
McCarthy began her career doing stand-up in New York City but eventually made the move west to Los Angeles where she found a home with "The Groundlings," a comedy troupe in which superstar comedians and actors have cut their teeth for decades. The alumni list of "The Groundlings" reads like the list you'd make when asked to name the funniest people on the planet.
McCarthy, post-Groundlings, has created some of the most beloved characters on television, like "Gilmore Girls,'" Sookie St. James and "Mike & Molly's," Molly Flynn. McCarthy happened to win her first Emmy for the latter of those two, by the way.
Her films, and specifically her performances in them, have been making audiences spew soda and choke on popcorn from laughter for years. No one is safe from near hyperventilation when her "Bridesmaids" character, Megan, while battling a galloping case of foodborne illness, rushes to an already occupied restroom and is forced to number two in the number two choice of facilities, the bathroom sink. McCarthy happened to receive her first Academy Award nomination for that performance, by the way.
McCarthy happens to be a pretty great host as well, considering "Saturday Night Live" has made her a member of the prestigious Five Timer club. Her work on that show has transcended typical Monday morning watercooler chatter, it's national news. Check out Circa News' coverage of some of her unbelievable antics on the streets of New York City HERE.
Happy birthday to comedic genius and national treasure, Melissa McCarthy.
