The hunt is underway for a man who shot a Missouri police officer at a traffic stop

A manhunt is underway for a suspected shooter involved in the death of a police officer during a traffic stop on Sunday.

Ian McCarthy, 39, is believed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol to be responsible for the death of officer Gary Michael. The young policeman, who was in his first year on the force, had stopped a Dodge Nitro for a registration violation at 10:45 p.m. on Sunday evening shortly before McCarthy reportedly exited the car and started shooting.

McCarthy then reentered the SUV and drove off before crashing the vehicle just two blocks away.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
