The Campbell Police Department in California is defending an officer who was caught on video pointing a gun at a passenger for nine minutes during a traffic stop, reports USA Today.
The department said the officer pulled over a driver who was speeding on July 28. Campbell police Capt. Gary Berg said that after the officer asked the woman who was driving for her license and registration, the male passenger in the car began to reach under his seat. The officer then perceived a threat and drew his firearm.
In the video, the passenger repeatedly says his hands are where the officer can see them, and he asks why the officer still has the gun trained on him.
Berg said that the reason the encounter lasted so long was because the officer was waiting for backup officers who were stuck in traffic.
The video has stirred strong reactions from users of social media.
