Despite the fact that nearly two decades have passed since the world was introduced to a quirky princess and a European nation known as Genovia, there's growing interest in a third installment of "The Princess Diaries." Author Meg Cabot, whose books led to Garry Marshall's film adaptations, didn't completely rule out another movie in tribute of the late director who passed in 2016.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Cabot acknowledged the movie rumors, but hasn't heard anything more about the film besides that a script exists.
“So, who knows? [It] could happen, as we say,” Cabot said.
Adding to the speculation is the upcoming release of Cabot's "Royal WEdding" on August 1. According to a description of the novel, "Royal Wedding" occurs five years after college graduation. The conflict centers around Princess Mia and her longtime boyfriend, Michael, who popped the question, but subsequently became a runaway groom.
But Cabot kept her mouth shut when asked whether another movie would take that direction.
“I think of them as two different universes. Like there’s 'The Princess Diaries' universe that I created, which is, you know, amazing, and the Disney universe, that they created, which is equally amazing. And, you know, there’s fans of both, and fans who actually kind of like both of them at the same time.”
Another universe Cabot hopes to introduce "The Princess Diaries" to: Broadway.
Actually, the one thing I’m really hoping for is a musical, so I hope we have a Broadway musical … obviously, somebody has to write the music and lyrics, and I’m not gonna do that because that’s not where my talents lie,” she said. “So I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that some day we’re gonna get one of those. That would be so fun.”
