Amazon founder Jeff Bezos surpassed Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates as the world's richest person on Thursday, Bloomberg reported.
Amazon shares rose 1.8 percent in early trading on Thursday. If the gains hold through closing, Bezos could jump ahead of Gates on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Gates has topped the list since May 2013.
As of Wednesday, shares of Amazon had surged 40 percent this year. Bezos owns 17 percent of the Seattle-based company. He also owns The Washington Post and founded aerospace company Blue Origin.
